Ionospheric potential
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006652
The electrical potential difference between the ionosphere and the Earth's surface, typically around 250 to 300 kilovolts in fair weather. This potential is maintained by global thunderstorm activity, which acts as a generator, driving a current through the highly conductive ionosphere and the resistive lower atmosphere. It is a key parameter in the global atmospheric electric circuit.
