Ionospheric trough
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006656
A region in the ionosphere characterized by significantly lower electron density compared to surrounding areas, typically found at mid-latitudes on the nightside of the Earth. This depletion is caused by a combination of plasma convection and recombination processes. The ionospheric trough can affect radio wave propagation and is a feature of the subauroral ionosphere.
