Electrosphere

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005339

The electrically conductive layer of the atmosphere, extending from an altitude of approximately 60 kilometers to the upper reaches of the ionosphere. This region acts as the upper boundary of the global electric circuit, maintaining a potential difference of several hundred thousand volts relative to the Earth's surface. The high conductivity is due to the presence of free electrons and ions created by solar and cosmic radiation.
