Blue-ice area

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003962

A region on an ice sheet or glacier where snow accumulation is negative due to wind scouring and sublimation, exposing the underlying glacial ice. The exposed ice appears distinctly blue because the long-wavelength red light is absorbed, while the short-wavelength blue light is scattered back to the observer. These areas are often found in Antarctica and are locations where ancient meteorites can become concentrated on the surface.
