Blue ice

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003958

Glacial ice that appears blue due to its density and the way it absorbs and scatters light. As snow compacts and recrystallizes into glacial ice, air bubbles are squeezed out, making the ice very dense. When sunlight penetrates this dense ice, red and yellow wavelengths are absorbed, while blue light is scattered and reflected, giving it a distinct blue hue.
