Equatorial westerlies

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005432

Winds that blow from west to east in the equatorial region, typically found in the upper troposphere or during specific phases of atmospheric oscillations. While easterlies dominate the lower tropical atmosphere, these westerlies can occur in association with the Madden-Julian Oscillation or monsoon circulations. They represent a reversal of the typical trade wind direction.
