Maximum zonal westerlies

The core of the strongest west-to-east winds located in the upper troposphere of the mid-latitudes, forming the jet stream. These winds are a result of the strong temperature gradient between the tropics and the polar regions. The latitudinal position and intensity of the maximum zonal westerlies steer storm systems and dictate weather patterns for the regions below.
