Inertial lag

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006520

The delay in the response of a measuring instrument to a change in the quantity it is designed to measure, due to the instrument's inherent inertia. For meteorological sensors, such as thermometers or hygrometers, this lag can affect the accuracy of readings, especially during rapid fluctuations in atmospheric conditions. It is characterized by a time constant, which represents the time required for the instrument to register 63.2% of a step change.
