Ground swell

Ocean waves that have traveled a considerable distance from their generating storm system, resulting in long wavelengths and periods. These waves are characterized by their smooth, rounded appearance and can arrive at coastlines with little or no local wind. Ground swells can propagate across entire ocean basins, affecting distant shores.
