Ground target

Any object or area on the Earth's surface that is being observed or measured by remote sensing instruments, such as satellites or radar. In meteorology, ground targets can include land surfaces, bodies of water, or specific meteorological instruments used for calibration. The characteristics of ground targets influence the interpretation of remotely sensed data.
