Coherent target
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004490
A radar target whose returns keep a definite phase relation to the transmitted wave from one pulse to the next, as with a rigid point scatterer such as an aircraft or fixed ground clutter. Its motion appears as a steady pulse-to-pulse phase change, from which Doppler velocity follows. Distributed targets such as rain differ, because their echo amplitude fluctuates as the many scatterers shift relative to one another.
