Coherent echo
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010438
A radar signal return in which the phase relationship between the transmitted pulse and the received echo is stable and measurable over time. This stability allows for the determination of the target's radial velocity through the Doppler effect, as the phase shift is directly proportional to the target's movement toward or away from the radar. Weather radars use coherent echoes to map wind fields within precipitation, distinguishing between approaching and receding air masses.
