Precipitation echo

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008109

The radar signal reflected back from hydrometeors, such as raindrops, snowflakes, or hailstones, within the atmosphere. The intensity of this echo is proportional to the size, number, and phase of the precipitation particles. Meteorologists use precipitation echoes to detect, locate, and estimate the intensity of rainfall and other forms of precipitation.
