Reflector
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008476
An object in the atmosphere that scatters electromagnetic energy back to a remote sensing instrument, such as a weather radar. The primary reflectors of interest are hydrometeors, including raindrops, snowflakes, and hailstones, whose size, shape, and composition determine the characteristics of the backscattered signal. The strength of this returned signal, known as reflectivity, is measured in units of dBZ (decibels of Z).
