Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010742

A phenomenon observed in radar displays where a strong, narrow beam of radar energy sweeps across a target, causing a bright, elongated echo that resembles a searchlight beam. This occurs when the radar antenna is rotating slowly or is fixed, and a strong, localized target, such as a severe thunderstorm, is present. It can sometimes obscure the true shape and intensity of the precipitation feature.
