Vaporware

A hardware or software product that a developer or company announces to the public but that never gets released or officially cancelled. The announcement is sometimes a marketing tactic to gauge interest or to dissuade potential customers from buying a competitor's product that is already available. The term implies that the product was never on a firm schedule for completion and may not have been in development at all.
