1. An individual applying for a PIV Card or derived PIV credential. The applicant may be a current or prospective federal hire, a federal employee, or a contractor.

2. A subject undergoing the processes of identity proofing and enrollment.

3. An individual who has applied for, but has not yet been issued, a Derived PIV Credential.

4. The subscriber is sometimes also called an "applicant" after applying to a certification authority for a certificate, but before the certificate issuance procedure is completed.

5. A subject undergoing the processes of enrollment and identity proofing.

6. An individual applying for a PIV Card.

7. An individual who has applied for but has not yet been issued a Derived PIV Credential.

8. An entity (organization or individual) that requests the assignment of a name from a Registration Authority.
