Census

Term · Economic statistics · MLC-T-ECS-000248

  1. A complete enumeration, usually of a population, but also of businesses and commercial establishments, housing, farms, governments, and so forth.

  2. (decennial) The census of population and housing, taken by the Census Bureau in years ending in 0 (zero). Article I of the Constitution requires that a census be taken every ten years for the purpose of reapportioning the U.S. House of Representatives.

  3. (governments) A census of governments is conducted by the Census Bureau every five years, in years ending in 2 and 7, as required by law under Title 13, U.S. Code, Section 161.

The 2012 Census, similar to those taken since 1957, covers three major subject fields: government organization, public employment, and government finances. The census identifies the scope and nature of the nation's state and local governments, classifies local government organizations, powers and activities, and measures state and local governments' fiscal relationships.

The data is released by level of government (state, local, or state and local combined), type of government (state, county, city, township, special district, school district), and category of governmental activity.
