Statistics about Governments
Term · Economic statistics · MLC-T-ECS-001863
Information collected about the nation's state and local governments, in accordance with Title 13, Sections 161 and 182. The information deals with government organization, such as the number and types of local governments and their powers and responsibilities; the employment and payroll amounts of governments; and their finances - revenues, expenditures, debts, and assets in the form of cash and security holdings. The Census Bureau determines whether an organization is a government by using three criteria: its existence as an organized entity; whether it has governmental character; and whether it has substantial autonomy both fiscally and administratively. The Census Bureau's statistics show governmental activity compiled into standard categories, or functions, rather than according to program name or type of financial account, so that governmental activities in different jurisdictions may be compared more easily.
