Advection
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-000598
1. Bulk transport of the mass of discrete chemical or biological constituents by fluid flow within a receiving water. Advection describes the mass transport due to the velocity, or flow, of the waterbody.
2. Transportation of contaminants by the flow of a current of water or air.
3. The transfer of heat or matter by the flow of a fluid, especially horizontally in the atmosphere or the sea.
4. The predominately horizontal large-scale movement of air that causes changes in temperature or other physical properties. In oceanography, advection is the horizontal or vertical flow of sea water as a current.
5. Advection is the transport of heat by the organized movement of fluid from one location to another. The term “convection” as used especially in the older literature is synonymous with the term “advection” as used here. In the context of ground-water recharge, the advection of heat is primarily through the flow of liquid water and thus depends primarily on hydraulic-flux density, water content, and initial and boundary conditions.
6. The horizontal movement of mass through a medium.
7. Transfer of heat or matter by the flow of a fluid, especially horizontally in the atmosphere or the sea.
8. The process of transfer of fluids (vapors or liquid) through a geologic formation in response to a pressure gradient that may be caused by changes in barometric pressure, water table levels, wind fluctuations, or infiltration.
