Albedo

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-000987

1. Albedo, or solar reflectance, is a measure of a material's ability to reflect sunlight (including the visible, infrared, and ultraviolet wavelengths) on a scale of 0 to 1. An albedo value of 0.0 indicates that the surface absorbs all solar radiation, and a 1.0 albedo value represents total reflectivity. ENERGY STAR Reflective Roof Products [https://www.energystar.gov/sites/default/files/specs//private/Roof_Products_Program_Requirements_V2_3_0.pdf] criteria specify an albedo of 0.65 or higher for low-slope roof applications and 0.25 for sloped roofs.

2. The amount of solar radiation reflected from an object or surface, often expressed as a percentage.

3. The fraction of the total solar radiation incident on a body that is reflected by it.

4. The proportion of the incident light or radiation that is reflected by a surface, like a forest, desert, city, or ocean. It can also refer to the light reflected by a cloud.
