Allele
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-001077
1. One of several alternative forms of a gene that differs from other forms by a mutation in the DNA sequence.
2. An alternative form of a gene or any other segment of a chromosome.
3. Alternative form of a genetic locus; a single allele for each locus is inherited from each parent (e.g., at a locus for eye color the allele might result in blue or brown eyes).
4. An allele is one of two or more versions of a gene. An individual inherits two alleles for each gene, one from each parent. If the two alleles are the same, the individual is homozygous for that gene. If the alleles are different, the individual is heterozygous. Though the term "allele" was originally used to describe variation among genes, it now also refers to variation among non-coding DNA sequences.
