alum (aluminum sulfate) treatment
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-001223
Alum or aluminum sulfate is an acid that is commonly used as a poultry litter treatment. Available in either a dry or liquid form, alum’s acidic properties are used to reduce ammonia levels in the poultry house, while its binding properties are used to reduce phosphorus (P) in runoff (Moore et al. No date). Alum is also used to reduce P losses from manure and wastewater, to increasing the efficiency of mechanical separation of manure, and to reduce P losses from grazing land.
