1. Species of animal or organism that is attacked by a parasite or a parasitoid
2. Any plant or animal on or in which another lives for nourishment, development, or protection.
3. In genetics, the organism, typically a bacterium, into which a gene from another organism is transplanted. In medicine, an animal infected or parasitized by another organism. [EPA 2005b]
