Background Radiation

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-002635

1. Radiation arising from radioactive material other than that under consideration. Background radiation due to cosmic rays and natural radioactivity is always present; background radiation may also be due to the presence of radioactive substances in building materials.

2. Natural radiation that originates from outer space (cosmic rays) and the decay of radioactive elements found in the earth's crust. This natural radiation is always around us.

3. Radiation that is always in the environment. The majority of background radiation occurs naturally and a small fraction comes from man-made elements.
