  1. 1. A metal (such as iron) which reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid to form hydrogen.

    2. Those metals usually considered to be of lesser value and of greater chemical reactivity compared to the noble (or precious) metals, most commonly copper, lead, zinc and tin.
