Base metal

The primary metal being welded, brazed, soldered, or coated, to which other materials are joined or applied. In welding, it is the parent material that is melted and fused, either with or without the addition of a filler metal. The properties of the base metal, such as its composition and thickness, determine the appropriate process and parameters for the joining operation.
