1. Gooey, black, high-sulfur, heavy oil extracted from tar sand and then upgraded to synthetic fuel oil. See tar sand.
2. Black or brown materials including, but not limited to, asphalt, tar, pitch, and asphaltite that are soluble in carbon disulfide, consist mainly of hydrocarbons, and are obtained from natural deposits of asphalt or as residues from the distillation of crude petroleum or coal.
3. Black or brown materials that are soluble in carbon disulfide and consist mainly of hydrocarbons.
4. A generic term applied to natural inflammable substances of variable color, hardness, and volatility, composed principally of a mixture of hydrocarbons substantially free from oxygenated bodies.
