By-product
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-003880
1. Materials, other than the intended product, generated as a result of an industrial process.
2. Material, other than the principal product, generated as a consequence of an industrial process or as a breakdown product in a living system.
3. A secondary or incidental product of a manufacturing process (e.g., scrap or emissions).
4. A material that is not one of the intended products of a production process. It is a catch-all term and includes most wastes that are not spent materials or sludges.
5. A secondary or additional product; for example, the more common byproducts of coal ovens are gas, tar, benzol, and ammonium sulfate.
6. Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, a byproduct is a material that is not one of the primary products of a production process and is not solely or separately produced by the production process. Examples are process residues such as slags or distillation column bottoms. The term does not include a co-product that is produced for the general public's use that is ordinarily used in the form in which it is produced by the process.
7. Placer metals, garnet, limonite, chromite, rare-earth elements, zircon, cassiterite, and other minerals concentrated during the mechanical processing of natural aggregates.
8. Material that is not one of the primary products of a production process and is not solely or separately produced by the production process. Examples are process residues such as slags or distillation column bottoms. The term does not include a co-product that is produced for the general public's use and is ordinarily used in the form it is produced by the process.
9. Chemical that is produced coincidentally during the production of another chemical.
