Capillary fringe
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-004093
1. The zone immediately above the water table within which the water is drawn by capillary forces (fluid is under tension). The capillary fringe is saturated and it is considered to be part of the unsaturated zone.
2. The porous material just above the water table which may hold water by capillarity (a property of surface tension that draws water upwards) in the smaller void spaces.
3. The zone above the water table within which the porous medium is saturated by water under less than atmospheric pressure.
4. The zone above he water table within which the porous medium is saturated by water under less than atmospheric pressure.
5. The zone of a porous medium above the water table within which the porous medium is saturated by water under pressure that is less than atmospheric pressure.
