Clay Flocculation
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-005143
Soil clay particles, due to their negativley charged nature, tend to repel each other and remained dispersed which results in low permeability. The presence of sodium in a soil often enhances dispersion and negatively affects permeability. Positively charged cations in soil water neutralize the negative charges and allow the soil particles to come close enough together so that flocculation can occur, which increases soil pore sizes and permeability.
