Coalbed methane

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-005410

1. Coalbed methane is methane contained in coal seams, and is often referred to as virgin coalbed methane, or coal seam gas. For more information, visit the Coalbed Methane Outreach program site [http://www.epa.gov/cmop/].

2. Methane contained in coal seams. A coal seam is a layer or stratum of coal parallel to the rock stratification.

3. Methane that is produced from coalbeds in the same manner as natural gas produced from other strata. Methane is the principal component of natural gas.

4. Methane contained in coal seams. A coal seam is a layer or stratum of coalparallel to the rock stratification.

5. Coalbed methane is methane contained in coal seams, and is often referred to as virgin coalbed methane, or coal seam gas.

6. Methane produced from coal seams. Coalbed methane is formed during coalification, which is the geologic process that transforms organic material into coal [Original source: https://www.eia.gov/tools/glossary].
