Coliform

1. A group of related bacteria whose presence in drinking water may indicate contamination by disease-causing micro-organisms.
2. A group of bacteria found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals (including humans), also in plants, soil, air, and water. Fecal coliforms are a specific class of bacteria that only inhabit the intestines of warm-blooded animals. The presence of coliforms is an indication that the water is polluted and may contain pathogenic organisms.
