Cone of depression
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-006112
1. The depression, roughly conical in shape, produced in the water table by the pumping of water from a well.
2. A depression in the water table that develops around a pumped well.
3. The area around a discharging well where the hydraulic head (potentiometric surface) in the aquifer has been lowered by pumping. In an unconfined aquifer, the cone of depression is a cone-shaped depression in the water table where the media has actually been dewatered.
4. A depression in the groundwater table (or potentiometric surface) that has the shape of an inverted cone and develops around a vertical discharge well.
