1. A lowering of the water table of an unconfined aquifer or the potentiometric surface of a confined aquifer caused by pumping of groundwater from wells. The vertical distance between the original water level and the new water level.

2. The drop in the water table or level of water in the ground when water is being pumped from a well.

3. The amount of water used from a tank or reservoir.

4. The drop in the water level of a tank or reservoir.

5. A lowering of the ground-water surface caused by pumping.

6. The difference between the water level in a well before pumping and the water level in the well during pumping. Also, for flowing wells, the reduction of the pressure head as a result of the discharge of water.

7. Lowering the water table due to withdrawal of groundwater as from a well.
