Constructed Wetland

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-006241

1. An artificial wetland system designed to mitigate the impacts of urban runoff.

2. A man-made basin that contains water, a substrate (soil, gravel, rock, organic materials, etc.), plants (vascular and non-vascular), and organisms similar to those usually found in natural wetlands. The number of plants and the biodiversity of a constructed wetland are greater than that of wet retention pond. Constructed wetlands usually use a relatively impermeable subsurface layer to prevent water from seeping into the ground.
