DNA Replication Primer
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-008354
In genomics, a short pre-existing single-stranded polynucleotide chain to which new deoxyribonucleotides can be added by DNA polymerase. It anneals to a nucleic acid template and promotes copying of the template starting from the primer site; a single-stranded nucleic acid that can "prime" replication of a template; a strand of nucleic acid that serves as a starting point for DNA replication. The enzymes (DNA polymerases) that catalize DNA replication can only add new nucleotides to an existing strand of DNA.
