ecosystem service
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-008952
1. Shorthand notation for an ecosystem good or service.
2. Describe the goods and services provided by healthy ecosystems - for example, the pollination of crops by bees, bats, or birds; the flood protection provided by wetlands; or the filtration of air and water by vegetation and soils.
3. The goods and services that people value that have natural functions or features as inputs. These goods and services cover a broad range, from food products to spiritual and cultural benefits. Ecosystem services can be divided into use and nonuse services, where use services are distinguished primarily by their requirement that users have direct access or proximity to sites generating goods and services, whereas nonuse services can accrue to those who are not close to the site and may never intend to visit the site.
4. Benefits that human populations receive from functions that occur in ecosystems.
5. Economic value of maintaining or creating natural processes or systems which provide and regulate clean air, water and soil.
6. The benefits people obtain from ecosystems. These services include the production of food and water; regulating, such as the control of climate and disease; supporting, such as nutrient cycles and crop pollination; and cultural, such as spiritual and recreational benefits.
