1. An area of water protected by land forming a bay such as Maumee Bay.
2. A recess or inlet in the shore of a sea or lake between two capes or headlands, not as large as a gulf but larger than a cove.
3. A water body with some level of enclosure by land at different spatial scales. These can be wide, curving indentations in the coast, arms of the sea, or bodies of water almost surrounded by land. These features can be small - with considerable freshwater and terrestrial influence - or large and generally oceanic in character.
