Ethanol
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-010132
1. An alternative automotive fuel derived from grain and corn; usually blended with gasoline to form gasohol.
2. A type of alcohol that can be produced from different forms of biomass, such as agricultural crops. Ethanol can be burned as a fuel, often by blending it with gasoline.
3. Otherwise known as ethyl alcohol, alcohol, or grain spirit. A clear, colorless, flammable oxygenated hydrocarbon with a boiling point of 78.5 degrees Celsius in the anhydrous state. In transportation, ethanol is used as a vehicle fuel by itself (E100), blended with gasoline (E85), or as a gasoline octane enhancer and oxygenate (10 percent concentration).
5. Anhydrous alcohol with molecular formula C2H5OH.
6. Ethanol means a fuel that contains at least 50 percent ethanol (ethyl alcohol, (C2H5OH)) by volume.
