Methanol
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-017114
1. An alcohol that can be used as an alternative fuel or as a gasoline additive. It is less volatile than gasoline; when blended with gasoline it lowers the carbon monoxide emissions but increases hydrocarbon emissions. Used as pure fuel, its emissions are less ozone-forming than those from gasoline. Poisonous to humans and animals if ingested.
2. A colorless poisonous liquid with essentially no odor and little taste. It is the simplest alcohol with a boiling point of 64.7 degrees Celsius. In transportation, methanol is used as a vehicle fuel by itself (M100), or blended with gasoline (M85).
3. Used as a solvent and as an intermediate in chemical synthesis. Capable of deicing mixtures and preservatives. Toxic.
4. Fuel that contains at least 50 percent methanol (methyl alcohol, (CH3OH)) by volume.
5. CH3OH. An alcohol as described in “Oxygenates.”
6. Any fuel sold for use in motor vehicles and commonly known or commercially sold as methanol or MXX, where XX is the percent methanol (CH3OH) by volume.
