Euphotic Zone
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-010173
1. The layer of a body of water that receives sufficient sunlight for photosynthesis. The depth of this layer, which is about 80 m, is determined by the water's extinction coefficient, the cloudiness, and the sunlight's angle of incidence.
2. The zone of the water column that is sufficiently illuminated for photosynthesis to occur.
3. The zone extending downward from the ocean surface within which the light is sufficient to sustain photosynthesis.
4. Layer of water that sunlight is able to penetrate through and reach plants growing underwater.
