Euphotic zone
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005483
The sunlit upper layer of an ocean, sea, or lake where sufficient solar radiation penetrates to allow for photosynthesis by phytoplankton. The depth of this zone varies with water clarity, season, and latitude, extending from a few meters in turbid coastal waters to over 200 meters in the clear open ocean.
