False Positive
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-010658
1. A positive result when the concentration of the target constituent is below the detection limit of the analytical method.
2. The conclusion that an event is positive when it is in fact negative.
3. An analysis determines the presence of an analyte when it is actually absent at a given concentration or limit. (statistical definition) An error of the first kind (type I error), which means rejecting the null hypothesis when it is actually true. {ORD} {OW/EAD} {OPP} {OW/TSC} {OAR/OAQPS} {ORCR}
4. A test or procedure result that incorrectly indicates a positive or abnormal result when no abnormal condition is actually present.
5. An error of the first kind (type I error), which means rejecting the null hypothesis when it is actually true.
6. False positives occur when the null-hypothesis or baseline condition is incorrectly rejected based on the sample data. The decision is made assuming the alternate condition or hypothesis to be true when in reality it is false. Also known as false rejection decision errors.
7. Also known as a false rejection decision error, a false positive occurs when the null hypothesis or baseline condition is incorrectly rejected based on the sample data. The decision is made assuming the alternate condition or hypothesis to be true when in reality it is false (EPA 2000a).
8. An analysis determines the presence of an analyte when it is actually absent at a given concentration or limit. (statistical definition) An error of the first kind (type I error), which means rejecting the null hypothesis when it is actually true.
9. Estimation that an analyte is present when it is actually not present. Also called a Type I (alpha) error or false rejection decision error.
