A soilborne plant pathogen that is found in corn growing in all regions of the world. It is the most prevalent mold associated with corn. It has also been found in rice, sorghum, yams, hazelnuts, pecans, and cheeses. F. moniliforme has long been suspected of being involved in animal and human diseases. Animal diseases associated with F. moniliforme include equine leukoencephalomalacia (ELEM) a liquefactive necrosis of the brain of horses, pulmonary edema and hydrothorax in swine, liver cancer in rats, and abnormal bone development in chicks and pigs.
