1. Broadly, the condition of humans and society, defined in terms of the basic material needs for a good life, freedom and choice, health, wealth, social relations and personal security. In economics, the term is often used interchangeably with social welfare [although the definition provided here is broader than the standard economic definition]. (derived from MEA 2005)
