Hydrologic Cycle

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-013676

1. The circuit of water movement from the atmosphere to the earth and its return to the atmosphere through various stages or processes, such as precipitation, interception, runoff, infiltration, storage, evaporation, and transpiration.

2. The movement of water in all of its phases (gas, liquid, solid) from the Earth to the atmosphere and back to the Earth.

3. (HI-dro-LOJ-ick) Movement or exchange of water between the atmosphere and the earth.

4. The process of evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, infiltration, runoff, and percolation in which water molecules travel above, below, and on the Earth's surface.

5. Movement or exchange of water between the atmosphere and earth.

6. The process of evaporation, vertical and horizontal transport of vapor, condensation, precipitation, and the flow of water from continents to oceans. It is a major factor in determining climate through its influence on surface vegetation, the clouds, snow and ice, and soil moisture. The hydrologic cycle is responsible for 25 to 30 percent of the mid-latitudes' heat transport from the equatorial to polar regions.

7. The cyclic transfer of water vapor from the Earth's surface via evapotranspiration into the atmosphere, from the atmosphere via precipitation back to earth, and through runoff into streams, rivers, and lakes, and ultimately into the oceans.

8. The description of the transport of water substance between the earth, the atmosphere, and the seas. or In hydrologic terms, the natural pathway water follows as it changes between liquid, solid, and gaseous states.
