Evaporation
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-010198
1. The process by which a liquid enters the vapor (gas) phase.
2. The changing of a substance from a liquid to a gas; evaporation generally occurs when the molecules of a liquid are broken apart by heat. In the water cycle, water evaporates from land, plants and waterbodies and enters the atmosphere as water vapor.
3. The process by which water or other liquid becomes a gas (water vapor or ammonia vapor). Water from land areas, bodies of water, and all other moist surfaces is absorbed into the atmosphere as a vapor.
4. The physical change by which any substance is converted from a liquid to a vapor or gas.
5. A part of the hydrologic cycle during which liquid water turns into water vapor.
6. The process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas or vapor.
7. The process where liquid water is converted to water vapor (gaseous state). The air above the evaporating surface must be unsaturated for evaporation to occur (relative humidity less than 100 percent).
8. Change from a liquid (more dense) to a vapor or gas (less dense) from. When water is heated it becomes a vapor that increases humidity. Evaporation is the opposite of condensation.
9. Water is vaporized and sometimes condensed for reuse. The remaining product is concentrated brine containing the dissolved solids from the original wastewater. The process may be carried out naturally in solar (shallow) evaporation ponds or through the use of commercially available evaporation equipment.
