Sublimation
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-027105
1. The change from solid phase directly to gas phase without passing through a liquid phase. For example, an ice crystal may sublime to water vapor where humidity is low and temperature is below freezing, such as when ice falls from cirrus clouds.
2. The transition of a substance from the solid phase directly to the vapor phase, or vice versa, without passing through an intermediate liquid phase. Thus an ice crystal or icicle sublimes under low relative humidity at temperatures below 0 degree C. The process is analogous to evaporation of a liquid.
3. The process whereby ice changes directly into water vapor without melting. In meteorology, sublimation can also mean the transformation of water vapor into ice.
