Sublimation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011518
The direct transition of a substance from the solid state to the vapour state without passing through a liquid. It takes place when molecules leave the solid surface faster than they return, which at a given temperature happens whenever the surrounding partial pressure of the vapour is below the solid's equilibrium vapour pressure. Dry ice, solid carbon dioxide, sublimes at atmospheric pressure, its vapour pressure reaching one atmosphere at about 78.5 degrees below zero Celsius.
